Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 8 Programmer Syllabus

Java Basics 

  • Define the scope of variables
  • Define the structure of a Java class
  • Create executable Java applications with a main method; run a Java program from the command line; including console output.
  • Import other Java packages to make them accessible in your code
  • Compare and contrast the features and components of Java such as: platform independence, object orientation, encapsulation, etc.
Working With Java Data Types 
  • Declare and initialize variables (including casting of primitive data types)
  • Differentiate between object reference variables and primitive variables
  • Know how to read or write to object fields
  • Explain an Object’s Lifecycle (creation, “dereference by reassignment” and garbage collection)
  • Develop code that uses wrapper classes such as Boolean, Double, and Integer.
Using Operators and Decision Constructs 
  • Use Java operators; including parentheses to override operator precedence
  • Test equality between Strings and other objects using == and equals ()
  • Create if and if/else and ternary constructs
  • Use a switch statement
Creating and Using Arrays 
  • Declare, instantiate, initialize and use a one-dimensional array
  • Declare, instantiate, initialize and use multi-dimensional array
Using Loop Constructs 
  • Create and use while loops
  • Create and use for loops including the enhanced for loop
  • Create and use do/while loops
  • Compare loop constructs
  • Use break and continue
Working with Methods and Encapsulation 
  • Create methods with arguments and return values; including overloaded methods
  • Apply the static keyword  to methods and fields
  • Create and overload constructors; including impact on default constructors
  • Apply access modifiers
  • Apply encapsulation principles to a class
  • Determine the effect upon object references and primitive values when they are passed  into methods that change the values
Working with Inheritance 
  • Describe Inheritance  and its benefits
  • Develop code that demonstrates the use of polymorphism; including overriding and object type versus reference type
  • Determine when casting is necessary
  • Use super and this to access objects and constructors
  • Use abstract classes and interfaces
Handling Exceptions 
  • Differentiate among checked exceptions, unchecked exceptions, and Errors
  • Create a try-catch block and determine how exceptions alter normal program flow
  • Describe the advantages of Exception handling
  • Create and invoke a method that throws an exception
  • “Recognize common exception classes (such as NullPointerException, ArithmeticExcpetion, ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException, ClassCastException)”
Working with Selected classes from the Java API 
  • Manipulate data using the StringBuilder class and its methods
  • Creating and manipulating Strings
  • Create and manipulate calendar data using classes from java.time.LocalDateTime,  java.time.LocalDate, java.time.LocalTime, java.time.format.DateTimeFormatter, java.time.Period
  • Declare and use an ArrayList of a given type
  • Write a simple Lambda expression that consumes a Lambda Predicate expression

    I am currently doing my masters in USA and i am willing to take OCJP test. I heard that OCJP has now been transformed into OCA and OCP.Is OCJP still considered as a valid certification in USA.

    Totally I have 3 years of experience in an IT industry as tester in both manual and automation.

    this 3 years of experience worked as contractor in mnc’s companies, not permanent role.

    Currently working as selenium testing using java code.

    So ,i’m planning to take up OCJP certification because I want move in mobile development for that it helps doing certification to get my profile to place in well reputed companies as both for product and service based.

    I am a working professional in Mumbai Midsize MNC . I passed out in 2013 BE IT as branch and now I am having 2.5 Years of experience in Manual testing . I want to switch to Java Development or Automation Testing . Does this OCJP Certification can help me in switch ? Do I have to start as fresher again with less salary ?

    Is there any schedule alloted by the oracle ?

  9. hi, i am currently a 2nd year student in iit bombay. I have completed my core and advance java certification course in my summer holidays. I am looking for more recognised and more valid degree in java. Will clearing ocjp with a good score prove to be a valid certification for me.I am aspiring to get a job with google or facebook or microsoft. Will this exam help me getting a job there.
    Also since you guys are charging a rather high amount for the exam so will you give give some sort of books for preparation. If not then can you at least suggest some good books to prepare from?

  10. Hi Im currently working in IBM As a contractor in the operational specialist.we support Vmware and windows.I want to shift to Development .Now currently I have 1 and half year experience .if I complete OCJP is it possible to get job as java developer.

    1. Definitely OCJP will help you to get job as Java Developer. But I am afraid your experience may not considered. You have to start as fresher.

    1. Yes OCJP Certification can sure help to get Job in Pune/Banglore/Chennai/Hyderabad.
      Exam Centers in Maharastra, May be Pune and Mumbai.
      For Study material You must have to Prepare Fundamentals of Core Java in depth.
      Any Time Exam can be given.

      Its good to hear from your side that you want to go a head with Java. First of all you have to Make Java Basics very Strong,
      Then you have to buy voucher from your nearest exam center of ocjp or you can buy online, and you can give exam any time at nearest
      exam center.
